September 13, 2007: Casey Wyatt NASCAR Busch East Rookie, Whelen All-American Late Model Series, INEX Legends Series & Pro-Winged Champ Kart Driver
Langley Speedway, HamptonVA- As tradition has it, Langley Speedway was closed last weekend for the Nextel Cup race at RIR. Going into this weekend’s race, the teams have had a week off to rest and regroup for the 100 lap Crossroads Fuel Late Model feature.
The desire for Casey and his team at Langley Speedway this year has been to win races. After starting from scratch this with a different chassis; being competitive has become the challenge. However, they have been a consistent 6th or better. But no wins in the Late Model series- yet.
Two weeks ago, Casey began the day fastest in practice, but started the race from the fourth spot. By lap 41 he had dropped back to the sixth spot and was fighting an extremely tight car when the caution flag waved for a spun car. Crew chief Sam Gaita discussed the need for some adjustments and Casey agreed that being the last car on the lead lap; in sixth place, there wasn’t much to lose. After his crew completed his adjustments, Casey returned to the race on the lead lap, behind the lap traffic. Within two laps, he had completed the pass of 7 competitors and by lap 53 had regained his position in 6th.
The 75 lap feature raced to the checkers without any additional cautions. The final 23 laps of the race, Casey was turning off some of the fastest laps in the field. Open practice tonight yielded even better laps on used tires than his last race. Therefore, the team is optimistic about their return to racing this weekend.
